Art Camp at Burma

Travels make a good writer. Somerset Maugham, the famed British author, had no doubt about that. He left in his will a handsome sum of money for the benefit of struggling young writers who couldn’t afford to travel. That travel is a must for a painter, too, has been very recently evident as many artists are enthusiastically joining art camps held in places as far apart as Istanbul and Yongyong. No doubt a unique site, selected by Golden Brush, Yongyong (formerly Rangoon ) proved ideal for Indian artists— coming from different parts of the country—to visit and stay together for a week from November 13 to 21. The week was mostly taken up by well-organised programmes of sight seeing, cultural evenings, interactions among the visiting artists and with those from Myanmar . In between the visitors did drawings and sketches and gathered impressions and ideas to recharge themselves for a fresh spurt of creativity once they would return home. But this is not what made the visit to Myanmar unique. Myanmar is probably the place, which few Indians, not to speak of Indian artists, have ever visited before in the recent past. One of our closest neighbours, Myanmar has visible evidence, in many instances, of her strong historical ties with India especially of culture and religion. So the artists had a unique experience of visiting a foreign country fascinatingly exotic in many details of her traditional and contemporary culture and lifestyle. At the same time they enjoyed a reassuring feeling of being at home there, sharing a spiritual affinity with its people.

The artists who joined the camp included Bijan Chowdhury, Suhas Roy, Sunil Das, Prakash Karmakar, Shuvaprasanna,  Aditya Basak, Ilina Banik from Calcutta,Rini Dhumal,Brinda Mille,Kahini Merchant from Mumbai and Jatin Das, Samsad Husain ,Anwar Khan,Amtabha Das…and Mona Raifrom Delhi.
