Born
in 1934, Shankar Ghosh commenced his formal artistic training in 1951, at
the Indian Art College and thereafter continued at the Government College
of Art & Craft, Calcutta from 1952 to 1957. Noted artists Gopal Ghosh,
Dilip Dasgupta and Pradosh Dasgupta were amongst teachers who helped shape
this formidable talent. Shankar Ghosh's work has been commended for their
aesthetic designs and each creation is imbued with an ethereal quality.
His sculptures are inspired by various facets of his environment, the
human form and different types of shapes. The sculptures are usually small
and very personalized. He feels his sculptures take him into an imaginary
realm, where all the encounters are one to one interactions with these art
forms, far beyond the materialistic world and the realities of daily
existence. While creating these masterpieces, moulding them, erecting them
and placing them on a pedestal what he experiences is sheer exhilaration.
He has held four solo
exhibitions and over tweenty group exhibitions at Lalit Kala Academy
(Delhi),
Academy of Fine Arts (Calcutta), Birla Academy of Art & Culture (Calcutta)
Artists' Centre (Mumbai)and All India Fine Arts & Crafts Society (Delhi).
Because of their uniqueness, Shankar Ghosh's sculptures have added stature
to the private collection of many an art connoisseur. Quite a few of the
sculptures are also on display at the National Gallery of Modern Art,
Chitrakala Parisad, Bangalore and the Lalit Kala Academy.
